I have worn a "cocoon" that I knitted by myself for 21 Days, including eating, transportation, traveling, attending class and sleeping. I forbid to speak during these days; instead I wrote or use devices’ system voice instead. I need to write in my diary every day about how my perception of myself changes, how my communication with others changes, and events in my immediate experience. The performance began on Apr.16 2019 12:00 pm and continue until May 7, 2019 12:00 pm. I want to explore: How could it change the limit and shape my body? How could this form alter my perception of this world? How could this form alter the communication between me and others? What will I learn from 21 Days about the way of “living”? The main technique that she used was Machine Learning. Based on her own "normal" or "cry" labeled images, if the current frame of the actress' facial expression in the video is classified as "cry", it will trigger the dummy head drops water which can be seen as crying. PROCESS: My project focused on the humanized extreme emotion carrier--tears and how tears can be defined as a language to build communication between human and machines. For the psychological perspective of a human’s tears, people like to have sad tears when seeing something have in common with their experiences. Also, people like to weep when watching somebody’s weep in front of them which could always trigger the sympathies in their heart. People like to mimic the other person’s facial expression when communication. The emotions really communicate with people and influence other people’s feelings. I want to focus on these humanized interaction and build the emotional link between human and machines. Machines may not have real emotions themselves but AI can help machines learn and do what humans teach them to do. I admit emotions are unpredictable and work as a key feature of being human. But the human facial expression, the physical situation always can trace a human’s emotion. For instance, we can get a conclusion whether one person is crying when seeing the facial expression of that human, or two light moving water traces emerging under the eyes. So does AI. They learn what kind of data expresses people’s emotions, like facial expressions. This machine pushes out small, accurate amounts of liquid which helps the water dropping more similar than the real tears from human. The tears need to be more controllable, so this machine can smoothly control the water from forward and backward by using Arduino. Helped by machine learning, if the current output image in the video is classified as cry, then it will triggers the syringe from the tears machine to push. So that the dummy head drops water which can be see as crying. 眼泪机器: 灵感来源于网络上一个医疗为用途开放资源。水放入针管里面，机器可以移动针管的抽拉部分，从而可以推出像眼泪一样少量的液体。深蓝色的部件是3D打印完成。 For general machine learning steps, I first need to get training data to train the network. I took pictures of myself with crying and normal images. Each of them was around 2000 images. These were the training data. The main technique used in my machine learning part is called CNN(Convolutional Neural Network), it is a widely used technique in Deep Learning. By studying given dataset and corresponding labels (cry or not) the network is able to learn the underlying pattern of an image regarding if there is any characteristic of a crying person, for example, the shape of the mouth or shape of the eyes.&nbsp;The code was adapted from here.&nbsp;Then based on the model that I have. I have a new set of data in order to see whether the training model is accurate. I chose a section of the movie Les Miserables which is a song called I dreamed a dream. This is a super emotional song which the actress cried and sang at the same time. I want to use this song as my final new-data in order to express the idea of how my facial classification read the movie. I saved each frame inside the movie and run them through the model that I had. One was Prediction showed each frame in the movie&nbsp; and how this image be seen in the code. Each face has its unique grid representation, which could be used to create different font based on its unique characteristics. Therefore I tried different people faces to design their fonts. However, the created fonts could barely distinguish with each other as I expected. It seems all human faces create similar fonts. So I started to try fonts induced by different animals categories like mammal, insect and shellfish It’s interesting that those animals induced fonts differentiated significantly. After that, I discovered one more thought-provoking observation that the fonts widely used today have more similarity with font induced by human facial features. A natural but interesting question came to my mind: what is the popular font (if exists) like in Age of Dinosaurs or in future if world is ruled by aliens from another planet? paintings as sources. My goal is to present a traditional painting in a different way. By using kaleidoscope, I want to transform images from static status into moving pattern. Kaleidoscope can be seen as moving tiles and texture design, bringing new combination of colors and shapes, which inherit but differentiate from the original view. Considering this special property of Kaleidescope, Monet’s painting is a very ideal option due to its emphasis on rich depiction of light in its changing qualities. Claude Monet is my favorite artist in French Impressionist. He was the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plein air landscape painting. Specifically, I like his combination of color and how he use color to sculpt landscapes. He built subtle relationships between warm and cold colors. I always impressed by his beautiful and deluxe colors which could be varies and detailed through every painting. I think it is interesting to use kaleidoscope to divided his painting into small pieces and then mirrored or reflected into a new moving art work.For the technical part,&nbsp; I use noise() function to move smoothly and slowly through the painting by capturing small tiles in the painting, and then mirrored the tile, and update velocity and position. https://xuhanart.com/Face-Drawing FACE DRAWING 脸书2.0 Dec/2017 A research studies of thousands of people who have lost the use of their hands and have had to learn to write with the pen in their mouths or between their toes show that they eventually produce their own unique “handwriting,” the same handwriting they had when they could use their hands. The point is it’s not the hand or mouth or toes that decide which way we will slant our writing or how big we will write. Those decisions actually come from our brains. So when we produce any graphic movement such as handwriting, we are actually “brain-writing” and leaving our “brain prints” behind on the paper. In terms of the research from handwriting and self-portrait, I want to do a project which could show the distinguish of face-drawings by different people and how these distinguishes could build by a content together to show the identity of the whole human-beings. This drawing from each person could partly be seen as self-portraits which have their facial features, facial expressions, movements and the paths which are their identities through their drawings.
